Texting and Driving
A recent issue that has been a big argument in most states is banning texting and driving. There are mostly two sides to this argument. One side is for banning texting and driving. These people see texting and driving as dangerous and life threatening and even worse than drinking and driving. The other side is leaving texting and driving legal. These people feel our society is now computer savvy and knows how to properly text and drive in a safe manner.
Texting and driving is a normality to todays society. Mostly everyone is guilty of it. Banning texting and driving will inconvenience many Americans. Instead of being for the texting and driving ban or against it, lets try and find a middle ground. Would it be a possibility just to ban texting and driving while the car is in motion? Lets maybe keep it legal to have a phone in a car and be able to use it, but only when the car is at a complete stop. By doing this, it will make our roads safer but will also keep people be in touch with their personal life.
Instead of looking at a side lets look at the major problem in this picture. Our society is addicted to technology. This argument would not have to be debated if Americans would just be able to use technology in a safe manner and not put people’s lives in danger. Technology is taking over peoples lives and this argument shows it very well. People should just be smart enough to realize that anything that distracts you, and takes your eyes off the road is a hazard and can put lives in danger.
How do you feel about this issue? Do you think our society’s obsession with technology is the real issue to this argument and could be prevented? How do you feel when you or others text and drive and how do you think it will help this argument?

People of today's society are way to technology savy. Many individuals can't go a minute, without having their cell phones with them. They consider their cell phones like a baby of their own, or even more important than one; mainly because many of the cell phone dependant individuals are teenagers, who haven't experienced what a real sense of responsibilty or proper priority feels like. These cell phone users who continue sharing operation of their cell phones and their cars show a higher emphasis of importance toward their cell phone usage than the possibility of harming other innocent drivers on the road. Although it is true that some people may think they are sufficient text-drivers, an unexpected freak accident can occur in a heart beat, and if your mind isn't completely focused on your surroundings, a tragic accident can occur. Although I think the idea to simply ban cell phone usage while driving can be ideal; if one recieces a call or text message urgent enough that you would risk causing yourself and other harm, an exceptional idea would be to pull over to the side of the road to engage the urgent conversation.
ReplyDeleteI think that texting while driving is dangerous, but like drinking and driving or talking on the phone while driving, whether it is banned or not people are going to continue to do it. I do not think that this issue has anything to do with today’s obsession with technology. I think people are constantly on the go and are always communicating with their friends and making plans for later and driving seems to be a convenient time to do this because you are spending time in the car, which seems like time that could be spent doing something useful. I think texting while driving is an is an issue because it could potentially cause a lot of problems, but I also do not personally know of anyone who has been in an accident due to texting which makes it seem like it is not so bad.
ReplyDeleteI feel that you can really ban texting and driving all together. How are cops going to always see that you are texting while your are driving. It's more a choice the driver has to make whether they think they can text and have their concentration off the road and still manage to be a safe driver or they wait to text until they are out of the car and keep full concentration on the road. I personally believe that drivers shouldn't text while driving because you are putting your life and others around you in jeopardy. We survived years before texting came about without texting your friends while driving, I think we can do the same now, regardless of what technology we have.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely believe that text messaging while driving should be illegal. But I'm not stopping there, I think using a cell phone all together should be banned while driving. I say this because talking or texting on the phone while driving just isn't worth the risk. About 25% of all automobile accidents are caused by a distracted driver using their cell phone. How can one possibly give the road in front of them all their attention while they are trying to read a small screen on their phone that mostly likely has nothing important to say? Cell phones are a big distraction to drivers, even more than talking to a passenger. Now if your car has that handsfree technology stuff, good for you, just use it. But if not, then pull over. I've had friends get in crashes because they were giving their phone more attention then the road in front of them. Ask them if it's worth it, they'll say no. Now, I will admit that I am guilty of talking on the phone and driving, just like most people. But I will also say that nothing makes me madder than a woman on the phone while going under the speed limit in the left lane. I'de like to send her a text message telling her the left lane is the passing lane, so move. Even though we all do it, I still stand next to my argument. The only question would be how to regulate texting and driving. I appologize to any women I may have offended with my example, but for real get off the phone. And besides, cell phones cause cancer.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt about it that people in todays society are definitely addicted to technology. If somebody's phone rings or receives a text message, most likely the person is going to drop whatever it is that their doing to answer, even if it's while driving a car. For this reason, I do believe that peoples mania with technology is an argument with this issue. If they try to make text messaging while driving illegal, it will be almost impossible to enforce. First, it would be hard to catch, because if a cop saw you text messaging while driving, you could always delete the message before the police officer got to your car, so it would look as if you are innocent. Also, whether they make is illegal or not, people are going to continue to text message while driving. In the end it is really up to the driver whether they think the text message is worth their life.
ReplyDeleteThe key problem with texting while driving is that your eyes are not looking at the road and your hands are not on the wheel. Yes people can be distracted by any number of things that are going on but texting is physically limiting how well you can drive a car. I think it should be illegal to drive while texting but we could use technology to solve this problem instead of blaming it. If a person really can not just call the person but must text then why not use a voice program that will type what you say. Such programs are available for people now on their computers. We could use the same technology for phones.
ReplyDeleteTexting and driving is an issue mainly focused on the teens and early drivers. I think that making texting and driving illegal is almost a joke because the chances of a police officer catching you in the act are slim. Now they have red light cameras and new technology to catch careless drivers but I dont think this will stop people from doing it. In the end it is up to the driver to be responsible for themselves and the lives of the other drivers on the road.
ReplyDeleteHand eye coordination is something most people do not have much power in. With that being said I think that texting while driving should be banned because as much as people think they can do it without crashing they are wrong. I am a victim. I once was in a car crash because a girl was texting while driving and as I can recall she said "I thought I would never crash doing it because I have yet to crash. I am for banning texting while driving.
ReplyDeleteI don't think society's proposed "addiction" to technology is the main factor or issue in the rise of texting and driving causing accidents and being an issue. The main reason in my opinion, why texting and driving has become so widespread and harmful is because it wasn't anticipated. There were no regulations set in place before it became an issue thus people did it carelessly and lost focus. Teens and some adults didn't see it as a threat because no one knew how bad the effects were. Just like smoking, the issues were realized too late.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Drinking and Driving is so much worse than texting and driving because you could be completely incoherent. Texting doesn't mean you are completely incoherent, just that you are momentarily not focused on the road. However, both are dangerous, and if there is a law against drinking and driving, than there should be a law against texting and driving. I have texted and driven before, and know that it can be very dangerous as I have lost all focus on what I was doing. I believe that the addiction is not towards technology, but towards the obsession with social interaction itself. Technology is just the medium. To draw a parallel, distracting friends talking in a car ride can also cause an accident.
