High school dropouts are more likely to be:
- unemployed
- in prison
- recieving government assistance
- less healthy
- divorced
- living in poverty
While most people agree that young people who don't complete high school face many more problems in later life than do people who graduate, some teens find that the benefits might outweigh the disadvantages. Teens that have kids might drop out so they can get mulitple jobs to support their children. Sometimes students feel that school just isn't right for them and that they could be getting an education somewhere else.
Some benefits of dropping out:
- Jumpstart your education
- Get a jump on the workforce
- Not wasting time
- Popularity doesn't interest you
- More time on your hands
There are many ways to look at the problem of dropping out of high school. While some choose to look at ethnicity and socio-economic status as an indicator for dropping out, others focus on peers, the overall drop out rates and how they have gotten worse or improved. Many intervention programs have been successful at reducing the overall high school drop out rate. Yet more is needed to be done until the concept of dropping out is foreign.
I wasn't aware about how many people drop out of high school. My personal opinion to this is you will be more successful in life if you graduate high school. Almost all high paying jobs require at least a high school diploma. It's interesting to me to find out how many students drop out of high school because I personally don't know anyone who has dropped out. I would say dropping out of high school wouldn't be the smartest decision, but that is also my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI have known many people who have dropped out of highschool, as well as college; they did not lead very succesfull lives. It is a real shame that these certain individuals do not get the attention they need. Looking back on their decision, peer dropouts have confronted me, to leave behind any idea of dropping out. It can be a good decision, under the right circumstances, but for the most part, it is wiser to push through the struggles of school and complete an education.
ReplyDeleteI think it is very important for all students to stay in High School because without their diploma they will never be able to get a real job and make enough money to support a family. I think the reason that students drop out is because they do not take school seriously and they are not interested in learning. The consequence of this is that later in life if you change your mind and decide to go to college to get a degree you will not be able to. I believe that students dropping out of high school are one of the biggest reasons that we have poverty in America; people are dropping an important opportunity that will have a huge affect on their lives.
ReplyDeleteI think that it doesn't not matter whether or whether not some one continues thier education. Ultimately it is their decision. But i beleive that high school has become so much of a joke that people either choose to just get by and barely past with little effort or finshi strong. I thinik that we should respect the decision of someone who bails their high school education. the statistics show that people without diplomas are of less caliber to those with diplomas, but i believe that it doesn't matter anymore, because diplomas and education can be certified almost anywhere. Also, i believe thay we are living in a lifetime that ist not about what you know or what you have but who you know and what they have to offer
ReplyDeleteI think that it is not a good decision for students to drop out of high school. I know that you are allowed to drop out of high school at the age of 16. I don't think that should be allowed because that is such a young age to make such a huge life decision. Dropping out of school can effect someones life so much. If you don't have a high school diploma it is very difficult for you to find a job and even try to find a career. Many students say they don't like school and having to be in school so long and they will go to school somewhere else or online but many students don't end up doing that. They usually just find a job that doesn't pay much. Eventually when they want to have a family they cant support the family because of low income. I know many people who live a low income life and it is really difficult to live life. Overall, I don't believe it is the right choice to drop out of high school because it can have negative effect on someones life.
ReplyDeleteI do not support dropping out of highschool because of peers etc. However, I do support dropping out of high school if the person wanted to get their GED and still pursue a career, but needed to do it without the whole "complete 4 years" thing. Coincidentally, I am somebody who has dropped out of highschool. I did so because I was lazy and didn't want to finish. One of the statistics was 75% of teens who drop out end up getting pregnant. Not suprisingly, I have a baby. This probably would have never happened if I had stayed pre-occupied with school. Luckily, I went back to school and got my diploma and am now making an attempt to finish this semester.
ReplyDeleteDropping out of highschool is a bad idea because teens have to much time on their hands. Teens like to think they "know it all", and they can make it in the world without an education. Truth is, these days you would have to be one talented, skilled, or lucky person to live comfortably without an education. A highschool diploma is a must if you want a decent-paying job.
